Is there a recruitment crisis in schools, and can we help?
Managing HR in Schools
Over the summer Nicky Morgan talked about the crisis in recruitment of teachers in schools. Whilst she and the unions dispute the actual figures, up to 40% of recently qualified teachers leave the profession within the first 3 years. On top of this there is a shortfall of teachers in STEM subjects; a third of headteachers are expected to retire in the next three years; there is a rising school population with the number of children at secondary school set to rise by 20% over the next 10 years; and UCAS report a fall in applications for teacher training.
These are all factors School Business Managers need to ensure are considered in their planning; for example, is there sufficient budget for recruitment and retention of staff? What is the school’s relationship with employment and recruitment agencies, both for staff cover and recruitment – do they provide value for money?
