Given the current climate with more and more people working from home and using their own devices, security vulnerabilities have never been more exposed.

Mobile device management (MDM) is software that allows ICT administrators to control, secure and enforce policies on devices such as, laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, and other endpoints. The intent of MDM is to optimise the functionality and security of mobile devices within the school whilst also protecting the network. This can protect the network by making it possible to disable certain user accounts, even if they are not on school premises. You can manage what apps and software are deployed to mobile devices, roll out updates and control permissions based on the devices.

Examples of leading MDM Software for alternative operating systems:

Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based service that focuses on mobile device management. Intune also allows staff within the school to use their personal devices for work. On personal devices, Intune helps make sure your school data stays protected and you can isolate your organisations data from personal data. Intune integrates with Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to control who has access, and what they can access. It can be used with Microsoft 365, for example Microsoft Teams, OneNote, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps. When devices are enrolled and managed in Intune administrators can:

    • See enrolled devices and get an inventory of devices accessing your schools’ resources.
    • Configure devices so they meet your security standards.
    • Push certificates to devices so users can easily access your network.
    • See reports on users and devices that are compliant and non-compliant.
    • Remove organisation data from a device if it is lost, stolen, or no longer used.

Chrome Device Management facilitates management of Chromebooks and all other Chrome devices from a cloud-based admin console. Upon purchase of Chrome enterprise or Chrome enterprise upgrades devices can be enrolled in the google admin console. With CDM administrators can enforce policies, setup Chrome features for users, provide access to internal VPNs and WIFI Networks, force and install chrome apps, extensions and more.

Cisco Meraki is a cloud-based solution used to centrally provision, monitor and secure all endpoint devices within your school, whilst keeping your network aware of constantly changing devices. Meraki is compatible with Apple IOS and Mac devices. By using Meraki, you can deploy wireless and VPN settings, push apps and content and allow / restrict usage based on their organisational unit (OU). Meraki allows you to locate and track devices anywhere as well as the ability to check device health, security, and software.

Here are just a few examples of MDM software and their capabilities. There are many others available. When selecting an MDM, be sure to consider not only your existing ICT infrastructure but any plans you may have. If you are unsure about MDM, if it is right for your school or trust, or which one to choose, feel free to get in touch, we will be happy to lend some advice.
