The month of May heralds end of key stage test time.

As you will be aware, pupils studying the new national curriculum will not be assessed using levels; instead, levels will be replaced by scaled scores.

What are scaled scores?

Scaled scores are widely used and help test results to be reported consistently from one year to the next. The DfE designs national curriculum tests to be as similar as possible year on year, but slight differences in difficulty will occur between years. Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that two pupils achieving the same scaled score on two different tests will have demonstrated the same attainment. So on the DfE scale, 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’. However, due to the small differences in difficulty between tests, the ‘raw score’ (i.e. the total number of correct responses) that equates to 100 might be different (though similar) each year.

How will scaled scores be worked out?

The papers will be marked and the raw scores will be added together for each section (out of 110 for maths, 50 for reading and 70 for spelling, punctuation and grammar). The raw scores will then be converted into the scaled scores.
